PostSubject: Job help?!?!   Mon Feb 16, 2009 5:41 pm

Well some of you know that I've had crappy times at work recently - as evidenced by my rant, lol! I now have a bit of a dilemma...
Beware, this could turn out to be an essay?! :S

Background: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I've worked with this company since I was 16 when I started as a saturday girl. The shop then opened on Sundays too, so I've worked weekends since I was 17. (Being at either School/University all week then work at the weekend does not make for a good social life, but that's another rant entirely!) Anyways, I'd been doing 7 day weeks til I was 20 when I finally decided that I needed a day off and something had to go. Unfortunately, even with my student loan I couldn't afford university and that worry, coupled with my exhaustion from working and the travel to and from uni everyday affected my grades and then I just gave up on university completely. I needed the money more.
Not long after I left uni, I was offered a better part time contract at work and was bumped up to 16 hours, then up to 24 (along with the title of Supervisor)

Problems at work:
Other than a general lack of staff and being paid minimum wage? There are still problems with our assistant manager in that she's still not at work. She hasn't even been in touch to let us know if she ever plans to come back to work...the last we heard (from her mother, who isn't employed by the company so shouldn't be calling in her daughter's place) was that she was waiting on an appointment with a shrink.
I've been working extra hours, which I don't mind but I certainly don't want to do permanently!
As well as being a Supervisor (and Keyholder) I'm in charge of the small fragrance section in our shop and the manager wants me to take over from our current beauty specialist too - this involves bumping up my hours again too which I wasn't thrilled about. It already seems like I'm never out of that place as it is!
All these titles involve training days too - on the other side of the country (I know Scotland's not big but I'm NOT good with travelling by myself, I got the wrong train last time which meant an extra £40 taxi fare which I didn't get back since it was my mistake)

Now:
There's a new store opening in town.
That last statement makes it sound as if we never get new shops opening up, we do, but they're mostly cafes and coffee shops or charity shops. This is a clothing store (which I obviously have no experience with), but I've seriously been thinking about going for a position. Just as a sales assistant rather then management/supervisor
To say I'm wary due to the current economy is an understatement...but I think this one would be worth it. The clothing brand is one that's quite popular in the area (esp. with the local equestrian market as well as the students in town - I know this because my mum works in a shop called Caledonian Countrywear (CCW) and they sell the brand...so I think the shop should do well. I suppose I'm just scared of the unknown - if I stay where I am at least I have an income, basic though it me be, it's still money.
But I'm fed up with being taken for granted in the shop I work in atm.

You know, winning the lottery would be so much simpler!

From your post I gather you're quite fed up with your current job! *I know, nothing gets past me!!lol*
Maybe you coud apply for the position at the new store, see what they are offering salary, hours, you would prolly meet with the boss for the interview all of which could help in making your choice. Sales wise it seems you are a salesperson already so perfume or clothes you can sell it, you'll just have to learn a little about your product.Sometimes change is good but you have to be comfortable with your decision.I hope this helps a little!!

I think there wouldn't be any harm going in like snow said and finding out the way things are in the other shop ie contracts and money and go from there, plus if you get the job and superdrug hear about it then they might decide tooffer you a better term of contract.

I completely know where you are coming from, the same happened to me in a big pharmacy chain and I got no thanks or appreciation for the job I was doing and i ended up leaving to go to a different job, better money and less responsibility! Bliss let me tell you! But do think about it long and hard before you do anything cause with the economic situation the way it is a job is better than no job even if its one you hate sometimes.

Hope that helped hon

Thanks guys, I'm putting in an application - they might not even be interested in me, lol!

Mandy, the economic situation is a worry. There have been other shops opening up, but they're ones I know nothing about. The Joules brand is really popular here though, I can't see the shop failing. At the moment only a few shops stock the range (and an equestrian catalogue).

Thanks again!
